|This Veteran's Day may we all remember the soldiers that sacrificed themselves for us.|
This song by Martika (Marta Marrera, b. 1969) went all the way to #1 in the U.S. in 1989. Martika actually began acting before getting into her recording career. She was in the 1982 film Annie and on the TV series Kids Incorporated from 1984 to 1986.
The song is about a friend of hers who had been addicted to cocaine. In an interview with the AP News Archive she said, "I was a little hesitant because I had only written two songs before and they were light songs. I came up to Michael [producer-writer Michael Jay] and said I wanted to write about drugs. It was the first time I got the nerve to write about something that was scary for me to talk about, so I did. He [the friend] can't listen to it. It gives him the chills. He says it affects him too much. He knows it's about him. He loves it. he thinks it's a beautiful song, but when he listens to my record, he skips over that.''
