DrGachetquotTheFriendofTheArtistsquot Photo We all know the painting “Portrait of Dr Gachet” created by Vincent van Gogh as one of the most expensive painting ever sold. Actually, there are two versions of the painting, one is in a private collection and the second is exhibited in a museum in Paris.
Dr Paul Gachet was more than just a model for Van Gogh. He was himself an amateur painter signing his paintings by the name of Van Ryssel, an art collector and a physician. He was born in the north of France in 1828 and later moved to Belgium with his parents. After graduating from university, he worked in a couple of mental institutions in Paris where he gained expertise in mental disorders. He obtained a medical degree and finally opened his own practice in Paris. He was a keen supporter of artistic movements such as Impressionism and made many friendships among the painting community with painters such as Camille Pissarro and Paul Cezanne, who were regular visitors at his house in Auvers sur Oise. Through his work as a physician and as a friend, he encountered and treated famous painters such as Manet and Renoir. We mainly remembered him as the physician who treated Vincent Van Gogh in the last weeks of his life, when the painting of the doctor was created. Van Gogh also painted landscapes and features found in Auvers-sur-Oise. Paul Gachet was an eccentric character dyeing his hair in blonde and wearing unconventional clothes. He was often called “the friend of the painters”. Therefore, we will have a look at the achievements of his famous friends and patients who either sat in the waiting room of his practice or visited his house in Auvers-sur-Oise.
I had a lot of fun researching this quiz. The starting point was the article in English Wikipedia. I found the article slightly incomplete therefore I used some sources connected to the town of Auvers sur Oise and French Wikipedia. It is not just a “whose painting is it?” or “who is the painter?” quiz. All the questions are not strictly related to the Dr Gachet and the paintings but the starting point is always Dr Gachet. I am sure that at the end of the quiz you will be as enlightened as I was when I finished writing the quiz.
